AFR 321W - Hard Bop Seminar

The American art form known as Jazz has a rich history which include several defining eras. This course will examine one such era, the Hard Bop period (mid 1950’s to the mid 1960’s). Hard Bop Seminar looks to explore several key instrumentalists and vocalists who helped to define this era including Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Ahmad Jamal, Betty Carter, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. Also examined will be the Hard Bop era and it’s influence on future jazz styles and it’s relevance to the American social climate of the 1960’s. Class lectures will include audio and video performances from the Hard Bop era with discussion concerning it’s birth and evolution.
Prerequisite(s): AFR 300W  and AFR 331 .
