AFR 310W - Jazz Analysis: Individuals and Perspectives II

3 credit(s) Writing Intensive
The American art form know as jazz has had many musical and cultural icons ranging from 1955 to the present day. Through this course, an in depth musical and historical aspect will be discussed concerning individuals including Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus and Steve Coleman. These musicians and their unique styles are explored through audio and video recordings. Class lectures provide an understanding for students toward writing a final exam essay of the jazz artist of their choosing. (A two-semester sequence)
Prerequisite(s): AFR 222 , AFR 223 , and AFR 300W .
