UIST 140D - Epidemics and HIV

3 credit(s) High Impact Practice: Diversity
This integrative course in the sciences is a multidisciplinary exploration of plagues and epidemics, with a particular focus on Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is caused by HIV. It reviews historical, social, political, and scientific aspects of HIV and related opportunistic diseases. The course aims to put HIV into perspective by comparing the scientific reality to popular misconceptions and examining how it compares to epidemics throughout history. The scientific concepts covered allow students to gain a fact-based understanding of the disease, to hone critical thinking skills, to develop a personal perspective on HIV, and to understand their role in disease prevention.
