BIO 340 - Medical Microbiology

A concept-based approach to microbiology for health profession students. Topics explored include an introduction to the structure, physiology, and genetics of microscopic organisms, the control of microbial growth by physical and chemical methods and antimicrobial agents. The course also covers a survey of infectious diseases including the causative agent, the host’s immune response, epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Laboratory exercises are coordinated with lecture materials. Designed for students in Health Science General Studies, Physical Therapy, Nursing, and Respiratory Care/Therapy programs. Medical Microbiology fulfills an upper-division Biology course requirement for B.A. Biology majors, but not for B.S. Biology majors. No credit given to students who have received credit for BIO 442 .
Prerequisite(s): BIO 122  and either CH 110  and CH 111P , or CH 114  and CH 136 .
