PSY 357 - Psychology of Relationships

This course provides an overview of current theory and research on the psychological science of relationships. Taking a social psychological perspective, we will explore the scientific study of how we initiate, develop and maintain relationships, focusing on interpersonal attraction, theories of love, and relationship development. We will primarily consider friendships, romantic relationships, relationships at work, and intergroup relationships. Students will learn about a variety of relationship processes, such as what attracts us to a potential friend or romantic partner, how we respond to relationship conflicts, and science-based strategies to promote harmony in relationships. The major theories of close relationships will be emphasized, including examinations of evolutionary, attachment, interdependence, and cognitive approaches. The role of culture and gender in relationship processes will be highlighted. Research techniques and methodological concerns will be discussed within the context of each topic.
