DPT 775 - Cultural Immersion in Physical Therapy

2 credit(s)
Cultural Immersion in Physical Therapy is designed to create a cultural humility approach to patient care in student physical therapists. The course will start on campus at the University of Hartford before traveling to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Prior to departure, students will participate in a workshop focusing on the cultures within the CNMI and strategies for interacting with a diverse clinical population. When in the CNMI, the students will treat patients at a local outpatient physical therapy clinic under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist instructor. The course is designed to meet professional and program objectives of being culturally inclusive and sensitive to different communities in treating their patients, including Southeast Asian cultures. Additionally, the course provides an educational and service learning experience unique to the University of Hartford. May require travel.
Prerequisite(s): Physical therapy major and DPT 635 .
