Psychology, B.A.

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. An undergraduate specialization in this liberal arts field is, therefore, useful for students who plan careers in business, industry, education, health services, personnel work, or in any of the various fields involving human relations. To become a professional psychologist, graduate training is necessary after completing the undergraduate major.

General Education Requirements (A&S)


In addition to major requirements, students must meet the General Education Requirements that correlate to their degree.

Major GPA and Grade Requirements


Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.25 in courses required to complete the major. All courses required for the major must be taken for a letter grade.

In addition to the six core courses (18 credits), students must complete at least two courses within Biological and Learning Perspectives (6 credits), two courses within Social and Applied Perspectives (6 credits), and two additional psychology courses (6 credits).

Note:

*These courses must be taken in the sequence listed. Students must earn a C– or above in PSY 270W  to enroll in PSY 372  and a C– or above in PSY 372  to enroll in PSY 470W .

And any two additional psychology courses (6 credits)


The two additional psychology courses may be completed from Biological and Learning Perspectives, from Social and Applied Perspectives, or from the courses described below. Only one of the experientially based courses may be applied toward the major. Additional experientially based courses may be taken for elective credit. These include

Transfer students must meet department core requirements for the major and must take a minimum of 15 credits above PSY 101  and PSY 102  in the Department of Psychology at the University of Hartford.

PSY 132 , PSY 232 , PSY 332 , and PSY 333  will not fulfill a requirement for the psychology major.

A 500-level course may be taken by seniors who have demonstrated superior performance in courses in the major, with written permission of the department chair.

All courses taken by declared majors to satisfy the major requirements must be taken for a letter grade and may not be taken on a Pass/No Pass basis, except Student Internship (PSY 384 , PSY 385 , PSY 484 , PSY 485 ).

Psychology majors must have an overall GPA of 2.25 in the psychology courses presented for the major. In addition, psychology majors must earn a C– or above in PSY 270W , PSY 372 , and PSY 470W .
