    This course includes an analysis of audio and video material documenting the diverse musical styles and original compositions for which Mr. Ellington is known. In addition, a cultural and sociological perspective on Ellington’s work is presented, including his collaborators, which include Louis Armstrong, Billy Strayhorn and John Coltrane.

  • AFR 603 - Analysis of the American Songbook


    3 credit(s)
    This course provides an in depth study of the American Songbook Standard literature of the early to mid-20th century. Formal analytic techniques address aspects of form, harmonic language and tonal design. Individual selections are studied from earliest harmonic styles of the first published sheet music versions and traced to contemporary approaches to re-harmonization.

  • AFR 623 - Historical Jazz Analysis

    This course provides an in depth examination of the American art form known as Jazz and the major contributors who helped to shape the idiom. The class lectures include audio and video performances of the careers of such major figures as Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman. This course also explores the major role Jazz music has played in the social and cultural life of America and throughout the world.

    This course provides an in depth examination and discussion on the arranging styles and techniques of seminal Jazz artists including Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Gil Evans and Thad Jones. Through audio and video examples, class lectures provide historical perspective on the Jazz arranging process and its fundamentals. In addition, coursework includes small and large ensemble Jazz arranging projects.

    This course provides an in depth examination and analysis on the Jazz music business concerning its history, legal practices and techniques for success. Topics include generating Jazz performance contracts, website building, self-strategies, acquiring music copyrights, preparing technical riders and building a data base of Jazz venues, musicians, promoters and agents.

    This course is designed to explore the genre of free improvisation. Concepts, techniques, approaches and attitudes to music and free improvisation will be learned in a performance situation. Discussions, written assignments, readings and listenings will figure prominently.
    Prerequisite(s): Students must have a level of instrumental proficiency equal to that of incoming Hartt undergraduates. Second-semester prerequisite: APC 500.

  • APC 512 - Alexander Technique for Instrumental Majors

    This course is based on the work of F. M. Alexander (1869–1955) and his principles of psychophysical unity. Students learn an improved overall use of the body, a fluid sense of movement, and a greater ease in breath and fine-motor coordination. Students perform in class in order to experience the direct application of the Alexander technique as related to their individual disciplines. Three hours weekly divided between private and class work. Course may be repeated but not for credit.

    Career preparation for instrumental and vocal performance majors beyond the mastery of their technical discipline. The course is in a modular format. Each module deals with a specific area of career development. Some of the topics are career options, résumé writing, auditions, producing a demotape/CD, beginning a solo/chamber music career, and beginning and developing a teaching career.

  • APC 530 - Yoga for Performers

    This course is designed specifically for performers of music, theater and dance at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and is open to the entire university community on a space-available basis, with preference given to Hartt students. It is an investigation into yoga practice and philosophy as a technique to enhance performance, cultivate concentration and focus, achieve flow states, and attain optimal engagement for peak performance and anxiety reduction. This course is a series of yoga practices involving movement, postures and meditation with an emphasis on breathwork. All coursework focuses on the body-mind connection and muscular-skeletal awareness to help prevent performance-related injury.

    Private composition instruction intended to advance students’ compositional technique and understanding of how their work fits into ongoing developments of compositional techniques, aesthetics, and technology. Individual strengths and needs are addressed through the mastery of both classical forms, technical studies, and the creation of new, original work. This is the first of a sequence of four semesters of intensive study and mentorship to lead the student to a level of understanding culminating in a Graduate Professional Diploma degree (GPD). Students who complete this curriculum successfully will be qualified to continue work at a professional level in the field, or to move to a master’s program in composition (MM).

  • COM 510 - Scoring for Wind Ensembles


    3 credit(s)
    Students learn effective scoring techniques for large ensembles of wind and percussion instruments, known variously as wind ensembles, wind symphonies, concert bands, and symphonic bands. Essential to the course is intensive score study of the wind band literature of the past hundred years. Students gain experience and skill through directed scoring assignments.

  • COM 514 - Composing for the Theatre


    3 credit(s)
    Students learn the role of music in primarily non-musical theatre performances and compose music within the constraints imposed by theatrical considerations. Students gain knowledge of theatrical production through lecture and discussion with the instructor, Hartt theatre faculty and staff and theatre professionals. Each student gains practical experience by collaborating with a Hartt faculty director and the Hartt Recording Studio in the composing and recording of a score for use in a Hartt play production. Enrollment is limited to six students.

  • COM 530 - Charles Ives and His World


    3 credit(s)
    The course will examine Charles Ives’s personal history, his historical and aesthetic context, and his (often fiercely independent and even zany) writings. In particular, it will concentrate on both a breadth and depth of his output, guaranteeing that—in terms of the former—the student understands the general parameters of the Ivesianoeuvre, and-in terms of the latter—also has a grasp of specific pieces in terms of their idiomatic techniques, and the exact nature of Ives’s compositional practice. In addition, the course will examine the work of the Ivesian “circle”, often known as the American “Ultra-Modernists” (Ruggles, Cowell, Harrison, etc.) and Ives’s influence on contemporary composers.

  • COM 630 - Music Criticism and Writing on Music


    3 credit(s)
    This course gives students both a theoretical/historical background in issues of musical criticism and practical experience writing on contemporary musical issues. Readings of classic texts, such as Hanslick, Schumann, and Thomson, will alternate with regular study of criticism as it is practiced in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Fanfare, The American Record Guide, and other publications. A series of weekly, practical writing exercises hones writing skills, as students appraise both live and recorded events. This course, while offered under music composition, deals with issues well beyond new music and is relevant to any musician.

    Introduction to algorithmic and interactive real-time composition, using MAX/MSP. Students create compositional structures that integrate MIDI data, synthesis, sampling, and processing.

  • COM 668 - Scoring for Film, TV, and Video


    3 credit(s)
    This course is for composers who are interested in writing music for film and video. Students study the technical aspects of film scoring, including synchronization, SMPTE code, click tracks, stopwatch and fee timing, spotting procedures, orchestration, and music software, as well as the aesthetics of film music. Major film scores, past and present, are analyzed and discussed. In addition, there is an exploration of the business of film scoring, including working with directors, music and film editors, working out a budget, contracts, fees, and negotiations. On special occasions professional composers and film editors are invited to talk with the class. A short film, at least 10 minutes, is fully scored by the end of the semester.
