  • HTT 313 - Costume Construction II


    3 credit(s)
    Advanced techniques and processes used in the construction of costumes for the stage. This course examines the processes involved in the realization of a set of costume designs, from the sketch to the stage. Focus is on understanding the design, build, and technical processes, including budgeting and sourcing; interpreting the rendering; selecting materials; and developing working relationships with the costume and production staffs, stage managers, and directors.

    Advanced study of the techniques and processes used in theatrical sound technology. Students are introduced to production design tools, acoustic assessment tools, and sound delivery systems addressing both conceptual and sound reinforcement design.

    Computer-aided drafting for the theatre involving electronic manipulation of lines, drawings, and symbols to convey visual ideas for construction and layout using AutoCAD software.   • HTT 479P - Production Internship


    6 credit(s) High Impact Practice: Internship and Collaborative Learning
    Designed to integrate the knowledge and skills gathered from all courses and production work through application in the professional world. A one-semester internship with a professional performing arts organization. Student’s work is monitored and evaluated by faculty adviser. Supervised field work in a performing arts organization in the private or public sector as a stage management intern. At the end of this 6-credit internship, students will complete an extensive academic paper analyzing the rehearsal and performance process of the show on which they are currently assigned. Students are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week at the company.

    This course is an introduction to the music education profession and degree program. Students discuss the philosophical and practical issues in music education and complete micro teaching and planning experiences. Through observation of current practitioners and guest lecturers, students explore the many facets of the music educator role, including the integration of technology into music teaching and learning. Students also identify logistical steps to progress toward certification.

  • MED 200 - World Music in Education

    Throughout this course students expand their knowledge of musics from around the world, create teaching strategies that align with world music pedagogy, and explore the methods used in ethnomusicology. The three strands of the course, world music, world music pedagogy, and ethnomusicology, will be addressed through reading, listening, planning, presenting, and discussing course content. Upon completion of this course, students are able to accurately identify musical characteristics of a variety of musics, utilize a culturally informed approach to teaching world music, and incorporate ethnomusicological fieldwork methods to explore an unfamiliar musical culture. This course is for music education majors only.

  • MED 303 - Elementary Instrumental Methods

    This course provides music education majors with pedagogical skills necessary to teach beginning band and strings. Topics include philosophy, objectives, recruiting, instrument selection, communication with parents, evaluation, motivation, administration, scheduling, acoustics, sequential instruction, teaching with modeling/singing and rehearsing. In addition to regular, on-campus sessions, the class participates in the Hartt Band and String Projects at the University of Hartford Magnet School on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Students are required to demonstrate proficiency on secondary instruments appropriate for teaching band and strings in an elementary school.

  • MED 304W - Secondary Instrumental Methods


    3 credit(s) Writing Intensive and High Impact Practice: Learning Community
    This course provides music education majors with pedagogical skills necessary to teach band and strings in secondary schools. Topics include philosophy, objectives, evaluation, motivation, administration, lesson plans, sequential instruction, marching band, professional development, jazz band, alternative string ensembles, score study, teaching with modeling/singing, hiring staff, traveling, and rehearsing. In addition to regular, on-campus sessions, the class spends time observing and teaching instrumental classes at public schools. Instructors arrange these off-campus session, but students are responsible for their own transportation. The class also participates in the Hartt Band and String Projects at the University of Hartford Magnet School.

  • MED 305 - Conducting Youth Ensembles


    2 credit(s)
    This course serves as a general introduction to the basic mechanics of conducting ensembles comprised of elementary-and middle school-aged students and includes discussion and practical application of these basic mechanics as tools for efficient rehearsals. Content includes basic patterns for different meters, left and right hand coordination, and changes of rhythm and tempo. There is consideration of basic mechanics in the reading and interpretation of choral and instrumental scores used in the co-requisite MED classes.

  • MED 306 - Conducting Advanced Ensembles


    2 credit(s)
    This course serves as an extension of basic mechanics of conducting ensembles to more advanced skills of conducting and rehearsing, particularly of secondary school-aged students and includes discussion and practical application of these advanced skills as tools for efficient rehearsals. Content includes patterns for mixed and multiple meters, use of left and right hands interchangeably, in-depth score study, interpretation, facial and gestural communication, and rehearsal planning. There is consideration of basic and advanced skills in the reading and interpretation of choral and instrumental scores used in the co-requisite MED classes.

    In this course, students develop competencies related to choral music education in PK-8 schools. Students build an understanding of the voice, discussing anatomy, the phonation process, tone, and voice change through adolescence. Students discover how to create and implement a sequential curriculum, how to plan and execute an effective choral rehearsal, and what resources are currently available to choral music educators.

    3 credit(s) Writing Intensive and High Impact Practice: Learning Community
    In this course, students will develop competencies related to choral music education in PK-12 schools. Students will develop an understanding of the voice, discussing anatomy, the phonation process, tone, and voice change throughout the lifespan. Students will discover how to create and implement a sequential curriculum, how to plan and execute an effective choral rehearsal, and what resources are currently available to choral music educators. To encourage transfer of theory to practice, students will participate in a weekly practicum experience teaching at local secondary schools.

    Student teaching of music in the elementary and secondary schools of Greater Hartford and other communities. Weekly conferences and seminars with cooperating teachers and University supervisors. Minimum 180 hours.

    This class teaches future music educators improvisatory skills and techniques and the pedagogy of improvisation.     The MPT practicum is a requirement for all students pursuing the music production and technology degree. Students assist more advanced students, Hartt recording studio staff, and music production and technology faculty with recording sessions, concert/recital recordings, studio maintenance and repair, and general studio operations. Students who show exceptional ability may be given chief recording engineer status and responsibility on particular projects at the discretion of the instructor and/or studio manager.

  • MPT 300P - Music Production Technology I


    4 credit(s) High Impact Practice: Collaborative Learning
    In this course, students begin to learn the language and the tools of the production studio. Topics include the physical aspects of sound, psychoacoustics, stereophonic and surround sound, microphone theory and application, loudspeaker/amplifier theory and application, basic audio control systems, analog and digital recording systems, basic studio and control-room architecture and acoustical considerations, and appropriate use of signal processing. Critical listening is explored through the analysis of recordings listened to and critiqued in class. In the lab, students work in small teams and individually to execute exercises and solve problems facing the beginning engineer/producer.

  • MPT 305 - Electronics for Music Systems I


    3 credit(s)
    This course is an introduction to audio electronics common to music systems. The course reviews the basics of sound and its properties and the fundamentals of electricity. It requires students to build simple audio circuits on breadboards. Students learn the basic underlying design principles of equipment in the music production studio necessary for everyday troubleshooting and communicating effectively with manufacturers and service technicians.

  • MPT 310 - Music Production Technology II

    Students expand their knowledge of the production studio. Topics include advanced audio control systems, analog and digital signal processing, timecode, automation, multitrack theory and practice, mixing, MIDI, synthesis, and sampling. In the lab, students work individually and in small teams executing specific assigned projects and gaining practical experience in the studio environment.

  • MPT 315 - Electronics for Music Systems II

    This is a continuation of Electronics for Music Systems I. Topics include power supplies, operational amplifiers, analog signal transmission, balancing, how to perform audio measurements, and the design of many pieces of studio gear. Labs continue the use of breadboards to build circuits, oscilloscopes for observing electronic signals, and multimeters to perform measurements.

  • MPT 361 - Immersive Music Production Techniques

    This course is designed to provide introductory instruction in the theoretical, technical, and aesthetical approach to multi-channel and immersive music production techniques. Topics covered in this course include the history of 3D sound, binaural reproduction over headphones and loudspeakers, surround sound, height channels, object-based audio, soundfield (ambisonics), wavefield synthesis, and multi-channel mixing techniques. These skills are critical for emerging audio professionals in a wide range of professional settings including music production, game audio, post-production film, and augmented/virtual reality.

    Training with a focus on production values and techniques. Topics include music production styles related to recording techniques, critical listening and analysis of production values, aural perception of performance environments, the use of multiple (artificial) performing environments, applications in effects processing advanced stereophonic techniques, surround-sound theory and practice, location-recording theory and techniques, professional organization techniques. The lab is designed to develop further the student’s ear and sense of production values. Individual (small-scale) projects are assigned and executed as full productions. Students are able to sharpen their skills in their musical area of choice but are also encouraged to explore music beyond their normal area of interest.

  • MPT 410W - Music Production Techniques II


    4 credit(s) Writing Intensive and High Impact Practice: Capstone
    The integration of all the student’s prior knowledge into the development of the “music producer.” Students are responsible for all creative and technical aspects of the production, including choice of composer, musicians, performance context, and identifying the target market. Selected student producers may also function as composers, arrangers, or orchestrators. Students are expected to refine their skills in their area of musical interest. The lab focuses on solving specific problems that arise out of the production assignments in class. Production situations and problems are discussed, and potential solutions are presented. Students present rough drafts of work as available.

  • MPT 420 - Music Production Special Project or Internship

    This project represents the culmination of all the theory and practical course work. Students are asked to complete a CD-quality project in their specific area of interest. Students may also choose an internship in the Department of Performing Arts Technology or at an approved professional audio production facility.

  • MPT 431 - Audio Post Production For Film & TV

    This course provides an overview of the workflow and specialized skills utilized by audio professionals working in the
    various areas of Audio Post Production for Film and TV. Topics covered include location recording, dialog editing/ADR,
    sound effects creation and editing, foley, music scoring, broadcast standards and mix requirements for TV and feature
    film formats. Throughout the course, students learn the philosophical concepts of designing sound elements for
    picture and apply these concepts in assigned research, analysis, small projects, and the completion of a large-scale
    final project. Students also engage in collaboration with the COM 468 - Scoring for Film, TV, and Video  course whereby original scores written by composition students in both the Jazz and Orchestral idiom are recorded and mixed.

    This class explores the many ways in which current and traditional media outlets are utilized to create viable and successful marketing tools and portfolio pieces that help promote a compelling and complete snapshot of an artist’s identity.   • MUM 431 - The Business of Live Music

    In this course, students review the basic structure of the live concert industry, explore current practices and trends in the US market and go deeper into the importance of performing live in an artist’s music career. Students gain an operational understanding of the financial elements involved in putting on a show with a critical eye towards common expenses as well as how those expenses are offset through income earned from ticket sales. This course also includes discussion of the mechanics of booking and touring a performing arts group, venue management, securing sponsorships, common and alternative funding methods, the role of the tour manager and how effective deals are negotiated between collaborating parties in the industry.
