AFR 330 - Jazz Composition

The American art form known as Jazz has produced many dynamic and influential composers who transcend musical genres. Also, the American Broadway songbook and its composers have provided much in the way of compositions for the Jazz genre. This course will explore the compositional approaches of composers including Fats Waller, Billy Strayhorn, Kurt Weill and Hoagy Carmichael. Lectures will include audio and video examples for an analytical perspective on the composers and their individual harmonic tendencies. In addition, there will be discussion involving the process and technique of writing Jazz melody, including the 12 bar blues, the 32 bar AABA form and non-traditional song forms.
Prerequisite(s): AFR 224  and AFR 225 .
