AFR 300 - Jazz Analysis: Individuals and Perspectives I

The American art form known as jazz has had many musical and cultural icons. Through this course, an in depth musical and historical aspect will be discussed concerning individuals from the early 1920s to 1954 including Louis Armstrong, Colman Hawkins, Art Tatum, Lester Young, Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker. These musicians and their unique styles are explored through audio and video recordings. Class lectures provide an understanding for students toward writing a final exam essay of the jazz artist of their choosing.
Prerequisite(s): AFR 222  and AFR 223 .
