JS 241 - Fundamentalism in the Near East

This course focuses on the Islamic movements in the modern Muslim world. We will discuss the following areas: 1) Islamic revivalism in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world in general; 2) Islamism in Pakistan and Afghanistan; 3) Islamism and the Palestine-Israel conflict. To achieve a coherent understanding of the Islamic movements, students are expected to read all the assigned material for the class. The material, written by well-known scholars in the field of Islamic Studies and comparative social studies, offers penetrating theological, political, social, and cultural analysis of the subject.
