PSY 553 - Clinical Lifespan Development 3 credit(s) This course will provide an overview of developmental theory and research relevant for clinical work with individuals through the life span. Developmental processes of the prenatal period, infancy, toddlerhood, early and middle childhood, adolescence, emerging adulthood, and middle and late adulthood will be examined along with ways to apply developmental knowledge to clinical assessment, intervention, and analyzing ourselves as developing individuals. Major theories of life span development and the research that supports or contradicts these perspectives will be studied. Specific topics to be covered include biosocial, cognitive and psychosocial theories of life span development, attachment theory, cultural and gender differences, temperament, and risk and protective factors for development across the lifespan. Prerequisite(s): Matriculation in a psychology graduate program or permission of instructor.
