HS 451 - Emergency Medical Technician I 4 credit(s) This course is the first of a two-course sequence that will prepare students to provide pre-hospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. At the completion of HS 451 and HS 452 (Emergency Medical Tech 2), students will have met the initial requirements for State of Connecticut and National certifications as an Emergency Medical Technician. Areas of study include an introduction to the emergency medical service systems, roles and responsibilities of emergency medical technicians, anatomy and physiology for pre-hospital providers, medical legal and ethical issues in EMS, documentation of patient assessments and interventions, critical thinking, leadership on emergency scenes, and understanding how science based medicine applies to pre-hospital emergency medicine. Students of this course will learn how to respond, assess, treat, and transport patients of all pre-hospital medical emergencies as a basic life support provider as part of an emergency medical treatment team. Prerequisite(s): HS 111 , HS 141P , or permission of instructor. Laboratory fee.
