PHI 215 - Practical Reasoning

3 credit(s)
Even when we don’t realize it, we spend our lives interacting with arguments. We hear them on the news, in advertisements, in scientific contexts, and at the dinner table. How do we know when an argument is a good one? Is it just a matter of convincing someone who disagrees, or does the truth of the claims matter? This course introduces students to the study of argument in science, philosophy, and everyday life. It requires students to learn everyday tactics of argumentation aimed at proving something to be true, how to detect poor reasoning, and formal systems of argumentation.
