AFR 623 - Historical Jazz Analysis

This course provides an in depth examination of the American art form known as Jazz and the major contributors who helped to shape the idiom. The class lectures include audio and video performances of the careers of such major figures as Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman. This course also explores the major role Jazz music has played in the social and cultural life of America and throughout the world.
Prerequisite(s): Hartt graduate student.
