EDD 843 - The New Professoriate 3 credit(s) This doctoral course provides you with a strong understanding of the evolving roles and work of college faculty, including the responsibilities and challenges they face as they enter and navigate their careers. In this course, we first examine the traditional work of faculty members in three main areas: teaching, research/scholarship, and service, and the forces and processes that influence these three areas, including academic freedom, shared governance, promotion, and tenure. We also consider differences in faculty appointments and institutional types, and the extent to which a faculty member’s identities shape their academic opportunities and trajectories. Next, to prepare future educational leaders for a diverse world, the course employs a plurality of frames (including institutional, organizational, social justice, and intersectionality) to discuss trends and social forces influencing the present and the future of the professoriate. Lastly, we delve into the circumstances and requirements needed to enter and succeed in a faculty position in US academia.
