MSOT 504 - Introduction to Occupational Therapy

Students will examine the historical and philosophical underpinnings of occupational therapy, focusing on the evolution and the associated influences of the social, political, and economic environment throughout the history of the profession. This course also introduces concepts of human occupation, and the framework for occupational therapy practice. Students will learn the profession’s language and foundations of occupational science. Guiding documents of the profession will be examined with emphasis on ethics and roles and responsibilities of a practitioner. The introduction of the diversity of occupational therapy practice environments and professional organizations is completed in this course. This course will promote development of professional values and include cultural sensitivity, client-centeredness, occupation-based and evidence-based practice.
Prerequisite(s): Accepted into MSOT program.
