MUM 431 - The Business of Live Music

In this course, students review the basic structure of the live concert industry, explore current practices and trends in the US market and go deeper into the importance of performing live in an artist’s music career. Students gain an operational understanding of the financial elements involved in putting on a show with a critical eye towards common expenses as well as how those expenses are offset through income earned from ticket sales. This course also includes discussion of the mechanics of booking and touring a performing arts group, venue management, securing sponsorships, common and alternative funding methods, the role of the tour manager and how effective deals are negotiated between collaborating parties in the industry.
Prerequisite(s): MUM 120 .
