3 credit(s)
The US currently houses 25% of the worlds’ imprisoned population, which is also disproportionately people of color. This course will provide a philosophical exploration of the ethics involved in living in a carceral society. How should we act when the techniques typical of the prison (the control of human behavior and surveillance) begin to spread through society as a whole? It will cover philosophical justifications for punishment, the ethics of different methods of punishment, whether solitary confinement is inhumane, and the social and political ramifications of living in a carceral society.
