UISS 145 - Gun Violence in America

3 credit(s)
In 2020, nearly 44,000 individuals in the United States died from firearm injuries. 55% were suicides, 36% were homicides, and 9% were accidental or defensive. Tens of thousands of individuals were also injured by firearms with estimates ranging from 30,000-120,000. Firearms were also brandished - but not discharged - in hundreds of thousands of assaults and robberies. Mass shootings, while tragic and subjected to widespread media coverage, accounted for approximately 1% of homicides. Are these levels of gun violence inevitable given the prevalence of gun ownership in the United States? Does the Second Amendment allow the federal government to place certain restrictions on gun ownership? Have certain restrictions (e.g. Federal Assault Weapons Ban) been effective at curbing gun violence?
