PSY 359 - The Psychology of Language

The psychology of language, or psycholinguistics, is the study of how people produce, understand, and learn language. Rather than assuming that language is an object that exists outside of people’s heads, psycholinguistics views psychology and cognition as integral to the creation and use of language. In the first part of this course, we will learn about the fundamental units of language like sounds, words, and sentences and how our minds produce, understand, and learn them. In the second part of this course, we will dig into the social, political, and cultural context of language use, in addition to other advanced topics in psycholinguistics like how the brain processes language and the basis of language disorders.
Prerequisite(s): Either PSY 105, or PSB 110 and PSB 111.
