DPT 775 - Cultural Competence in Physical Therapy 2 credit(s) Cultural Competence in Physical Therapy is designed to facilitate a multicultural appreciation in student physical therapists. The course will start on campus at the University of Hartford before traveling to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Prior to departure, students will participate in a workshop focusing on the cultures within the CNMI and strategies for interacting with a diverse clinical population. When in the CNMI, the students will treat patients at a local outpatient physical therapy clinic under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist instructor. Student assignments include self-reflection, case studies, and immersive cultural experiences. Cultures of the CNMI include the Pacific Islanders (Chamorro, Carolinian, and others), Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and mainland North American communities. The course is designed to meet professional and program objectives of being culturally inclusive and sensitive to different communities in treating their patients. Prerequisite(s): Physical therapy major and DPT 635 .
