COM 530 - Charles Ives and His World

3 credit(s)
The course will examine Charles Ives’s personal history, his historical and aesthetic context, and his (often fiercely independent and even zany) writings. In particular, it will concentrate on both a breadth and depth of his output, guaranteeing that—in terms of the former—the student understands the general parameters of the Ivesianoeuvre, and-in terms of the latter—also has a grasp of specific pieces in terms of their idiomatic techniques, and the exact nature of Ives’s compositional practice. In addition, the course will examine the work of the Ivesian “circle”, often known as the American “Ultra-Modernists” (Ruggles, Cowell, Harrison, etc.) and Ives’s influence on contemporary composers.
