APC 600 - Teaching Methodologies of Vocal Pedagogy

2 credit(s)
This class will explore the physiology for singing; the breath and vibratory systems as well as the vocal tract and its articulators. It also surveys the history and practicality of various methodologies of vocal pedagogy that have evolved over the last two hundred years. Specific vocal acoustics will also be explored. The influence of both the physiology and vocal acoustics on common vocal concepts will be considered: support, registration, passaggi, chiaroscuro, open throat etc. Informal emphasis will be given to self-reflection of past vocal progress as a means of understanding the learning process and ultimately serve as a catalyst for communicating this process. Included is a study of the varying approaches to practical vocal pedagogy derived from the Euro-classical foundations. As a final, there will be a field trip to an Otolaryngologist to see the unique vocal instrument up close. Two students will have the opportunity to see their vocal folds on video via a videostroboscopy.
Prerequisite(s): Graduate standing.
