NUR 615 - Theories of Learning and Teaching for the Health Professions

This course offers a survey of educational theory and practice relevant to the art and science of teaching in nursing. Students will explore concepts and innovations in nursing education to strengthen skills in facilitating learning, facilitating learner development and socialization, and pursuing continuous quality improvement in teaching in the classroom, clinical, and other healthcare settings. Situational application of theories and teaching strategies in classrooms, virtual classrooms, clinical settings, and simulation are emphasized. This course also includes critical evaluation of the role of the nurse educator as a facilitator in the learner’s development and socialization, which will assist the student in developing a personal teaching philosophy by the end of this course. Observational fieldwork is required. The framework of this course is based on the National League for Nursing’s NLN Core Competencies for Nurse Educators.
Prerequisite(s): Matriculation in the Master of Science in Nursing program.
