CS 568 - Data Mining

3 credit(s)
Data mining studies techniques and paradigms in-depth that allow computers to extract hidden patterns in databases and perform prediction and forecasting. The explosive growth of data collection in science and business applications has created the necessity for automating knowledge discovery from this data. As a result, data mining is an increasingly important tool. Data mining techniques are used in a wide range of applications including fraud detection, scientific discovery, forecasting stock market returns, marketing, and in modeling and predicting customer buying patterns. The course introduces students to data mining concepts in-depth. Data mining techniques and their most relevant applications are presented. Students explore these techniques through practical problems and by using free open-source data mining software.
Prerequisite(s): Matriculation in the MS in CS program; or senior standing and permission of the instructor.
Course fee.
