HLM 218 - Introduction to Video Game Music

Course Cross-listed with UISA 117 .
3 credit(s)
Blip, bleep, bloop-what, exactly, is there to say about video game music? It’s just sort of there, right? Well, yes, it’s (usually) there, but there is quite a lot to say about it! The field of ludomusicology-the study of sound and music in games-is growing by leaps and bounds, and this class will serve as an introduction to that field. We will study the history of video games and their sound, looking at everything from the relationships between music and technological constraints or capabilities to the multiple roles that sound can play in different kinds of game genres. Parts of the class are thus organized in loose chronological fashion, whereas other parts of the class are designed around various themes and topics drawn from game theory, composition, technology, music theory, and cultural studies. No prior musical knowledge or gaming experience is required!
