JS 221W - Arabic Poetry and Literature in TranslationCourse Cross-listed with ENG 221W 3 credit(s) Writing Intensive This writing-intensive course offers a comprehensive exploration of Arabic poetry and literature, tracing their development from the pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyya) to the modern era. Students will engage with the rich literary heritage of Arabic verse and prose, examining their themes, forms, and cultural significance across different historical periods. The course will also highlight the transformation of classical and modern Arabic poems into musical compositions, particularly in the 20th and 21st centuries, where many works have been popularized by renowned Arab singers.
Through close readings of selected poems and literary texts, students will analyze the interplay between language, rhythm, and meaning, while also exploring how these poetic and literary traditions have been adapted and re-imagined in contemporary music. As a writing course, students will develop their analytical and expressive skills through regular writing activities, including two research papers and bi-weekly writing assignments.
