In Progress 2026-2027 Graduate Catalog [ARCHIVED BULLETIN]

ARC 587 - Architecture, Society and Technology 3 credit(s) This graduate studio investigates the evolving relationship between architecture, society, and technology with a focus on artificial intelligence as an emerging generative medium. The course examines how previous technologies in architecture were developed to meet defined social and technical needs, and contrasts this with AI as a powerful tool initially lacking a clear architectural purpose. Students design an architectural project and produce a full drawing set-plans, sections, elevations, site plans, diagrams, and visualizations-exclusively through text-led, AI-mediated workflows. No manual drawing, drafting, or direct 3D modeling by students is permitted; instead, students author and refine prompt systems that generate architectural documentation. Readings in technology, media theory, and architectural history support critical reflection on authorship, ethics, and agency in AI-assisted design. Prerequisite(s): Matriculation in Master of Architecture program or permission of instructor or chair.
