CON 550 - Choral Conducting for Singers

Course Cross-listed with CON 450.
1 credit(s)
This course provides an introduction to the technical and artistic foundations of choral conducting, designed specifically for vocal performance majors. Students develop essential conducting skills, including fundamental patterns, ensemble coordination, rehearsal techniques, and expressive gestural communication. Emphasis is placed on aural skills, score study, purposeful warm up design, and the integration of diction, text interpretation, choral balance, and relevant theoretical and historical context. Students engage in structured peer feedback and gain hands-on podium experience, serving as both conductors and ensemble members in a collaborative choral laboratory setting. The course meets once a week for 1 credit and may be repeated for credit, as the repertoire will vary each semester. Graduate VP students with limited conducting experience are also welcome to enroll, providing an opportunity to refine and strengthen their skills in a supportive, applied environment. Graduate students will be required to do two research projects related to the repertoire covered in class.
Prerequisite(s): Permission of Instructor for non vocal performance majors.
