AFS 343 - Politics of the Global South

An interdisciplinary examination of the colonial origins, Cold War/post-Cold War context for emergence as independent states, and contemporary political issues in the Global South (including Africa, much of Asia, Central and South America, and the Middle East). Emphasis is on the meaning of development and obstacles to attaining it. Internal colonialism and settler colonialism in the U.S., including treatment of Native Americans, ex-slaves, and immigrants will also be explored.
Prerequisite(s): Any 100-level POL course, or AFS 110 , or POL 200W , or permission of instructor.
