CMM 107 - Future Shock: Emerging Media Technologies and Social Transformation

3 credit(s)
Area/Group Designation: Media and Journalism
This course examines emerging and futuristic media technologies-including artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, brain-computer interfaces, algorithmic systems, and the metaverse-through social science frameworks. Students will analyze how these technologies may reshape social structures, power relations, identity formation, and human interaction. Drawing on sociological theory, futures studies, and science and technology studies (STS), we explore both utopian promises and dystopian risks of technological transformation. Through critical analysis of current developments and speculative scenarios, students will develop frameworks for understanding technology-driven social change.
