CMM 141 - Political Communication and Civil Discourse

This course aims to explore and examine the principles and practice of civil discourse, the dynamics of political communication, and the ways in which democratic societies foster dialogue across differences. Inspired by the mission of the Rell Center to promote civility, integrity, and respect in public service, this class equips students with the historical, theoretical and practical tools to engage in meaningful and constructive conversations about timely and impactful social and political issues. In addition, students will gain a foundation of the history of civil discourse, the rhetorical strategies of political players, and the role of media in shaping public opinion. Through assignments, analysis and discussion of case studies, and structured discussion leveraging political thought leaders, students will develop skills in civil discourse, active listening, and respectful debate. This course aims to prepare and motivate students to participate thoughtfully, respectfully, and intelligently in civic life or public service.
