DMJ 310W - Narrative Journalism for All Formats

3 credit(s)
This course will explore the art and craft of narrative journalism and storytelling across various platforms, including print, audio, and digital/multimedia. The focus is on developing advanced reporting, interviewing, writing, and production skills necessary to create long-form, immersive, and character-driven non-fiction stories. Narrative storytelling in journalism is a non-fiction approach that blends traditional reporting with literary techniques to create compelling, in-depth stories. It focuses on human experiences through character development, scene-setting, and dialogue to provide a deeper, more emotionally resonant understanding of real events and complex issues. Key elements include the use of literary devices to make facts come alive while maintaining journalistic accuracy and ethical integrity. Students will learn how to find, report, structure, and produce deep, character-driven, and emotionally engaging stories for text, audio, video, and interactive platforms. The goal is to move beyond the traditional inverted pyramid and master the techniques that turn factual reporting into resonant, enduring journalism.
