Music Theory Doctoral Minor

Admission

  1. Hartt DMA and Ph.D. students who wish to broaden their experiences in music theory may apply for admission to the doctoral minor in music theory program.
  2. Since all of the courses in the doctoral music theory minor program are offered alternate years, it is imperative that students apply for the program by contacting the chair for music theory at the beginning oftheir doctoral studies.
  3. Applicants are required to submit to the department chair: (a.) a complete transcript of prior graduate course work, (b.) a statement of intent regarding undertaking the program, and (c.) a graduate analytical paper demonstrating both music theoretical skills and writing skills. Application materials will be reviewed by the music theory faculty.

Program

  1. Credits may not be transferred into the doctoral music theory minor program. Students who have successfully completed equivalent courses in other graduate programs are required to complete the appropriate waiver-substitution courses to fulfill credit requirements for the doctoral music theory minor.
  2. While completing required courses for the doctoral music theory minor, students must register each semester for TH 675 /TH 676  (Music Theory Colloquium).
  3. Students registered for required courses in the Spring semester must participate in the annual department review of music theory majors held at the end of the Spring semester. The purpose of the annual department review is for the music theory faculty to assess the progress of all department majors and minors regarding their analytical skills, communication skills, musical skills, and functional skills. The outcome of the annual department review is an important factor determining the continuation of a student in their music theory program.
  4. Once all required course work for the doctoral minor in music theory has been completed, students are not required to register forTH 675 /TH 676  or to participate in the annual department review of music theory majors.
