The Art History program in the Hartford Art School offers certification for people who are interested in college-level work in the field. A wide selection of courses allows the participant to fill in gaps in earlier education and experience. For those who pursued an entirely different field of study in college, this is a suitable way to begin the study of the history of art. For anyone who already has a bachelor’s degree in another discipline, the certificate strengthens an application to a master’s degree program in art history.

Requirements for the Certificate

The requirements for the certificate are 21 credits of art history:

2-3 courses (6–9 credits) at the 200-level, including

ART 215W - Art across Borders 3 credit(s) OR
ART 216W - Introduction to Non-Western Art 3 credit(s)

4-5 courses (12-15 credits) at the 300 or 400 level

three of which must be distributed among the three of the following five content areas:

Ancient or Medieval
Renaissance, or Baroque and Enlightenment
Modern or Contemporary
Non-Western (African, Asian, Mesoamerican, Islamic, Native American, or other)
Topical: ART 355 - History of Visual Media (only when it is offered as History of Prints), and other courses that overlap the boundaries of the first four areas. These may be offered as ART 383 - Artforms or ART 390 or ART 490 - Special Topics in Art History and will be designated in the schedule as topical.

Required prerequisite:

College-level work, preferably a bachelor’s degree.
