The Master of Arts (MA), Major in Music degree is a rigorous program that prepares students for further graduatelevel study, offering curricula designed to elevate student accomplishments in their pursuit of professional excellence. Students in the program receive a broad overview of musical study with access to courses in areas including but not limited to: Instrumental or Vocal Performance, Composition, Music History, Music Theory, and Instrumental or Vocal Conducting. Because of the vast number of elective courses at the graduate level, the Master of Arts, Major in Music program will allow students to experience an array of academic and performance classes, to support their abilities and expand their creativity, without being overly prescriptive. Music majors in the MA program may take courses from a variety of disciplines that introduces students to other fields and ways of thinking. As a final project, students have the choice of completing a thesis, recital, or lecture-recital.

1HLM 611 , HLM 612 , and HLM 613  must be taken first if required per placement exam.

2TH 611 , TH 612 , and TH 613  must be taken first if required per placement exam. HLM 611 , HLM 612 HLM 613 , TH 611 , TH 612 , and TH 613  do not fulfill requirements in music history or music theory.

3Vocal Performance Language requirement: Ability to translate from Italian, French, and German, and be able to translate a song or aria text of moderate difficulty, with the help of a dictionary.

4Full-time students may elect to take one or two additional semesters of private instruction for 3 or 4 credits each semester in the same instrument/composition/voice for no extra fee.

5The Hartt School and the University of Hartford offer numerous electives in many disciplines. Students may elect to take 3-6 credits outside of The Hartt School.
