Program Information

The pre-professional Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Design + Technology is a rigorous academic program that prepares students for a variety of professional careers in architecture and the construction industry. The focus of the program is the design studio in which the technical, structural, and liberal arts courses are integrated through the creative process in the design of progressively more complex architectural projects. A strong component of general education, with particular emphasis on communication skills, as well as multiple electives in the later years, ensures that students who pursue this program of study will have a challenging architectural education and a broad understanding of the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue advanced degrees in architecture and related disciplines or entry into architecture or the building industries. While the career objectives of graduates vary greatly depending on their concentration of electives, all involve interaction with other professions in design and construction.

The Bachelor of Science program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org. The Master of Architecture program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), 1735 New York Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20006; www.naab.org.

Optional Concentrations

Some students desire to focus their studies on a particular area of architecture or construction. For these students we offer three concentrations: Construction Management, Environmental Sustainability, and Professional Practice. These concentrations provide a more in-depth study and develop specific skills in the related areas through the selection of specific courses to satisfy program electives. Concentrations are optional. Students can choose to take the standard AD + T curriculum in which case they would satisfy electives in a broad range of study areas related to architecture, business, art, or technology.

Concentration in Construction Management  

The degree requirements of this concentration are the Architectural Design + Technology curriculum with specific required courses in management and construction techniques which will supply a graduating student with the ability to enter the management field with a strong architectural design and structures background.

The Architectural Design + Technology degree requires students to complete 12 credits of technical specialties and 9 credits of professional electives for a total of 21 credits.

Required technical specialties are ADT 353  and one other upper-level course in the major.4

Required professional electives are ADT 250 ADT 340 , and one of the following: ADT 300 , ADT 442 , or MGT 310 .

Environmental Sustainability Concentration 

The  Environmental Sustainability Concentration requires the following courses:

Two (2) Technical Specialties:

Two (2) Professional Electives chosen from the following:

One (1) Humanities/social sciences elective OR Lab Science elective chosen from the following:

Program Educational Objectives


The Program Educational Objectives for the undergraduate Architectural Design + Technology, B.S. degree are that, within a few years of graduation, students will be expected to:

  • Attain a position of responsibility and integral participation with an architecture or engineering firm, construction management, construction company, facilities management, or development company.
  • Be actively earning internship qualifications to meet the IDP requirements for taking the Architectural Registration Exam or other professional licensing/registration.
  • Have an active role in professional organizations at the local, state, or national level and active service in the broader community.
  • Be prepared to enter professional degree programs in architecture and other disciplines.

Note:

*If a student elects to take EC 363 , both EC 110  and EC 211  are required prerequisites.  This would increase the total number of credits from 133 to 136.
