Minor in Commercial Music (Non-Hartt Students)

This version of the undergraduate minor in Commercial Music is open to all University of Hartford students, Non-Hartt, who want to deepen their musical creative experience and enhance their individual and ensemble performance abilities in this highly diverse musical genre. The academic courses provide a fundamental knowledge of reading and writing music, with the private lesson and ensemble experiences allowing students to put that knowledge into practice. Students may audition on either guitar, bass, drums, piano/ keyboards, or voice. To complete this minor, the student must register for a letter grade in all courses counting toward the minor. Students must receive a grade of B- or higher in all courses, with the allowance of no lower than one C in a single course.

Admissions process

  1. The student must successfully complete an interview with the director of the Contemporary Studies Division, or a designated faculty member.
  2. The student must successfully complete an instrumental or vocal audition with designated faculty members. The intent of the audition is not to present a barrier, but rather to be informative, instructive for proper lesson and ensemble placement. An additional fee is assessed for non-Hartt students to register for private lessons.
  3. The student must take the Music Theory placement exam  for proper level assignment of Music Theory courses.
  4. The student must fill out and process the University’s Change of Curriculum Form to add the minor. This form requires signatures of the student’s advisor, as well as the Director (Chair) of the Contemporary Studies Division, and the Dean (or designee) in the Hartt School. It is returned to the Manager of Student Services in the Hartt School.
