Architecture, M.Arch.

Master of Architecture, Track 1 (48-credits)


The Master of Architecture program prepares students for a variety of professional careers in the design and construction industries. The M.Arch Track 1 is available to qualified students with a preprofessional architecture degree and prerequisite graduate courses from the University of Hartford only.

In a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting, the Architecture program balances theoretical, technical, professional, and creative knowledge. Students prepare for careers in architecture and a wide assortment of other design, construction, or business-related professions. The pedagogic approach to architecture education centers on the design studio. The studio provides the appropriate environment for the assimilation and synthesis of knowledge gained throughout the curriculum by incorporating design, aesthetic, technology, and the needs of people. The sequence of studio courses provides sequentially more challenging projects and intendeds to develop the student’s skills to acknowledge, analyze, articulate, and synthesize solutions pertaining to the built environment.

For those students who want to broaden their education at the graduate level, the University offers additional degrees in conjunction with other graduate programs, including the M.B.A. (Barney School of Business ), the M.F.A. (Hartford Art School ), and the M.Eng (College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture ).

To qualify for admission, applicants must have received a preprofessional architecture degree from the University of Hartford and have a GPA of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. Student must also have completed the following 16 credits of prerequisite graduate courses as part of their undergraduate degree:

The student’s background and preparation must be such in content and scope as to indicate the ability to complete successfully the curriculum requirements.

Master of Architecture, Track 2 (64-credits)


The Master of Architecture program prepares students for a variety of professional careers in the design and construction industries. The M.Arch Track 2 is available to qualified students with a preprofessional architecture degree (BS in Architecture, BA in Architecture, etc.) from any institution.

In a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting, the Architecture program balances theoretical, technical, professional, and creative knowledge. Students prepare for careers in architecture and a wide assortment of other design, construction, or business-related professions. The pedagogic approach to architecture education centers on the design studio. The studio provides the appropriate environment for the assimilation and synthesis of knowledge gained throughout the curriculum by incorporating design, aesthetic, technology, and the needs of people. The sequence of studio courses provides sequentially more challenging projects and intendeds to develop the student’s skills to acknowledge, analyze, articulate, and synthesize solutions pertaining to the built environment.

The student’s background and preparation must be such in content and scope as to indicate the ability to complete successfully the curriculum requirements.

Master of Architecture, Track 3 (113-credits)


The Master of Architecture program prepares students for a variety of professional careers in the design and construction industries. The M.Arch Track 3 is for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than architecture and who have little to no architectural education or training.  The M.Arch Track 3 consists of 49 credits of prerequisite courses and 64 credits of required graduate courses.

In a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting, the Architecture program balances theoretical, technical, professional, and creative knowledge. Students prepare for careers in architecture and a wide assortment of other design, construction, or business-related professions. The pedagogic approach to architecture education centers on the design studio. The studio provides the appropriate environment for the assimilation and synthesis of knowledge gained throughout the curriculum by incorporating design, aesthetic, technology, and the needs of people. The sequence of studio courses provides sequentially more challenging projects and intendeds to develop the student’s skills to acknowledge, analyze, articulate, and synthesize solutions pertaining to the built environment.

To qualify for admission, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0. Students with some architectural education, but not a preprofessional degree, may apply for advanced standing to waive select prerequisite courses.  Students applying for advanced placement must submit a portfolio of design work and equivalent course syllabi for the perquisite courses for which they are requesting an advanced standing waiver. Advanced standing application must be submitted prior to the start of the program and will be reviewed by the architecture graduate admissions committee.
