Music Theory Minor (M.M.)


The Hartt Master of Music music theory minor is designed to be compatible with the Hartt Master of Music degree and to provide students who are qualified for the program the opportunity to develop their analytical skills and broaden their knowledge and experience with the discipline of music theory.

Application Process

Since required courses for the program are offered on an alternate-year basis, students interested in applying for the program are encouraged during the first semester of their first year of study for their Master of Music degree to contact the music theory program chair for guidelines containing detailed information regarding the program and its application requirements.

Students applying to the program are required to:

  1. submit a written statement of application providing information regarding intent, and musical and academic training,
  2. provide transcripts of all college course work,
  3. at least two letters of recommendation, and
  4. a theoretical analytical paper or examples of their theoretical analytical instruction.

Students applying to the program will meet with two faculty members of the music
theory program for a one-hour interview consisting of the following:

  1. discussion of the program and the applicant’s statement of application,
  2. applicant analyzing a movement of a Beethoven piano sonata, and
  3. applicant demonstrating their keyboard skills (tonal chord progressions, tonal melody harmonization, and open-score reading of a Classical string quartet movement).

Note(s):


*The TH or HLM elective should have either a pre-tonal or post-tonal emphasis with syllabus confirmation demonstrating systematic theoretical rigor within the course. This graduate TH or HLM course could also have a popular, jazz, or ethnomusicological emphasis with syllabus confirmation demonstrating systematic theoretical rigor within the course.

Students are required to participate in the Annual Music Theory Assessment.

To complete this minor, the student must register for a letter grade in all courses counting toward the minor and must not receive a grade lower than B in any of these courses.
