Organizational Psychology, M.S.

Required credits (36)

The Organizational Psychology program addresses the critical leadership skills required to enhance organizational effectiveness. Today’s leaders and managers need to know how to promote teamwork, manage transitions, and restructure organizations. The Organizational Psychology program provides a theoretical framework in organizational behavior and allows students to evaluate and improve their own skills in research design, data collection and analysis, communication, facilitation, and leadership. The program helps students develop both their theoretical understanding of individual, interpersonal, group, and organizational issues, and their ability to put that theory into practice. This integration of theory and practice prepares graduates to lead, manage, and/or consult with dynamic and diverse organizations operating in a global environment.

The 36-credit-hour program is designed to meet the needs of three groups of students. It provides (1) a strong foundation for students who intend to pursue further graduate work, (2) solid training and applied experience opportunities for students who wish to terminate with a master’s degree and apply their acquired skills and knowledge in the marketplace, and (3) an opportunity for non-psychologist professionals who wish to become more knowledgeable about the application of psychology to their professional interests.

Degree Requirements

The Organizational Psychology program in the Department of Psychology is a 36-credit program comprised of five required courses (15 credits), including either a capstone project (available to all) or an internship (on-campus only), and a total of seven electives (21 credits). Accelerated Master of Science in Organizational Psychology

The Accelerated Master of Science in Organizational Psychology program allows students to complete a bachelor’s degree (BA) in Psychology and a master’s degree (MS) in Organizational Psychology in a shorter time and at a reduced price. Students in the Accelerated program save money on tuition and living expenses and benefit from earlier entry into the workforce and increased earning potential. In addition to undergraduate courses, accelerated students take pre-approved graduate coursework, 9 credits of which could be applied toward both the B.A. and the M.S. in Organizational Psychology. The cost of these graduate courses is included in undergraduate tuition. Once fully matriculated in the MSOP program, students can complete the remaining graduate courses through a campus-based or online version of the Organizational Psychology program.

3+1 Option

The 3+1 BA/MS Program allows Psychology majors to complete their bachelor’s degree (BA) in Psychology in three years and a master’s degree (MS) in Organizational Psychology in one additional year, for a total of four years of study. Accelerated students must declare a Psychology Major and begin the program in the fall of their first undergraduate year and cannot complete the undergraduate portion in fewer than three years.

During the three undergraduate years, each fall and spring semester, students will take six 3-credit courses (18 credits). In addition, students take up to seven 3-credit courses (21 credits) across Winter and Summer terms at no additional tuition cost. Every semester, students must maintain a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.2 to continue in the program. If the GPA falls below 3.2, the student is placed on academic probation and has one semester to improve. Failure to do so results in removal from the 3+1 Program and transfer to the standard 4 year undergraduate Psychology program.

4+1 Option

University of Hartford students apply to the 4+1 BA/MS program in the spring of their junior year by completing the Graduate+ online application. A psychology major is preferred but not required. Preference is given to candidates who have an overall GPA of at least 3.0, based on a minimum of 70 credits, and a psychology GPA of at least 3.25, based on a minimum of 9 credits.

Students admitted to the 4+1 accelerated program complete a Bachelor of Arts in four years and a Master of Science in Organizational Psychology in one year, for a total of five years of study. Matriculating in the Master of Science program is conditional on the student’s completing the B.A. while maintaining an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and earning a grade of B or better in each of the three graduate courses completed before the end of the senior year.

Dual Degree Partnerships with the Barney School of Business

Two Dual Degree options are also available for students interested in earning both a Master of Science in Organizational Psychology and either an MBA (Master of Business Administration) or an MSBA (Master of Science in Business Analytics). Both dual degree programs are comprised of 60-credits representing a reduced credit requirement for the MSOP portion of the degree to just 30 credits (or 10 classes). Dual degree students complete the same five core MSOP courses listed above, but only 5 electives (instead of 7). Likewise, the MBA or MSBA degree options require 30 credits (or 10 classes) each through the Barney School of Business as outlined in the associated Dual degree catalog pages. Participation in one of the Dual degree programs requires admissions review and acceptance from both the MSOP program and either the MBA or MSBA program through the Barney School of Business. Interested candidates can select the Dual degree option of their choosing as their program of interest on their Graduate Admissions application.
