AFR 331 - Jazz Arranging

The American art form known as Jazz has produced many dynamic and influential arrangers who transcend musical genres. This course will explore the arranging styles of artists including Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones and Wayne Shorter. Lectures will include audio and video examples for analytical perspective on the arrangers and their individual harmonic tendencies. In addition, there will be discussion involving the arranging process and technique (i.e., small and large ensembles).
Prerequisite(s): AFR 330 .
