PHI 380 - Enlightenment and Revolution

This course is primarily focused on philosophers writing between 1750-1900, a period of social and political upheaval marked by revolutions in the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe. Revolutions had a huge effect on the philosophy of this time period–both in methods of knowledge acquisition and the transformation of society. Philosophers at this time challenged traditional authorities by developing their own theories of the best organization of society, the relation of society to the practice of science, how social norms and rules are developed, the justification of government, and critical analysis of economic systems. The course may cover authors such as: Kant, Hegel, Marx, Wollstonecraft, and Nietzsche.
