ENG 315 - Yiddish Literature in Translation

This course will provide an overview of Yiddish literature and culture from the early modern period to the present. Beginning with an overview of the development of Yiddish as one of many diasporic Jewish languages, the course will go on to explore some key areas of Yiddish cultural activity over time in both Europe and the United States. Readings will consist of a mix of primary sources and scholarly materials providing background on Yiddish literature and culture. All course readings will be in English. No prior knowledge of Yiddish language or literature is required.
Prerequisite(s): Any literature course or permission of the instructor.
