HTA 340 - History of Music Theatre

This is an in-depth survey course that traces the evolution of the musical theatre genre from its earliest incarnations through the present day. Topics include Ballad Opera, European and American Operetta, British Comic Opera, Revue, Vaudeville, Musical Comedy, Musical Drama and Jukebox Musicals. Special focus is on those composers, lyricists, librettists, and other artists that have contributed significantly to the development of the artform.
Prerequisite(s): Open to the entire university community; music theatre majors must have junior standing or permission of instructor.
