ADT 494S - BB: Design and Construction Studio

12 credit(s)
This course is the major integrative course of the program providing students with the opportunity to practice and learn by doing the theory at the basis of the course. The course is about experiencing an integral process of programming, design and construction, where the reality of the place as it is, and as we want it to be mirrors our collective self, and reaches a deeper level of sustainability. We start with preliminary work of design that links up to our personal feelings in the exploration of and ornament and our own “home”; then we work on understanding the design problem in terms of a Project Pattern Language, and in parallel in exploring the latent centers of the site through “Land Exploration”. In the second semester we proceed to the design and construction phases, where we move from mocking up the project full scale on the land to its actual construction and refinement in detail. These phases are explored over two different projects, one of small scale in the Sant’Anna Gardens and one at larger scale in an outer public space to be confirmed.
Prerequisite(s): ADT 156 , ADT 232 , ADT 244 , or junior standing.
