PHI 242P - Environmental Ethics

Course Cross-listed with ENV 242P
3 credit(s) High Impact Practice: Service Learning
What makes an environment natural or artificial? Should nature have rights? Must I be vegan to be moral? Should we set up more nature conservancies? What makes an animal ‘wild’? This course provides consideration of these, and other, fundamental ethical questions concerning human interaction with nature and animals. Over the course of the semester, it will also illuminate key assumptions about humanity, our relationship to the world around us, and traditional ethical thought. This course has a service learning element, which means that it requires participation in local environmental or animal welfare organizations as an element of both serving the community and gaining deeper insight into course materials.
