UISC 118D - THE SILK ROAD - Music, Art, Culture, and Identity 3 credit(s) High Impact Practice: Diversity The Silk Road was a series of routes from the Mediterranean all the way to East Asia, operating from the Bronze Age to 1500 CE. There was the dynamic exchange of goods, arts and culture, and ideas that moved along these routes-possibly the first instance of “globalization.” Against a background of geography, politics and history, this course will look at the exchange of religion, art, music, and culinary traditions. The vibrant cultures of Greece, Persia, Turkey, India and Central Asia, and East Asia including Mongolia, China, Korea, and Japan will be explored, with a focus on their influence and interaction with each other. We will consider the social impact on music and other arts, and how traditions and identity were shaped by the Silk Road, creating a rich tapestry of life. As a course that emphasizes the study of non-Western ethnicities, it satisfies the diversity designation.
